What Exactly IS Return on Investment (ROI) in Crypto?
ROI is your ultimate profitability scorecard. It measures how much money you've made or lost relative to your initial investment, shown as a percentage.
Think of it this way:
- Positive ROI? Your investment was profitable!
- Negative ROI? You incurred a loss on that investment.
Understanding your ROI helps you assess if your crypto strategies are working.
Why ROI is a Crypto Investor's Best Friend
Objectively see if a specific trade or long-term hold was financially successful.
ROI lets you fairly compare the performance of different cryptos, or even crypto vs. other assets.
Track ROI over time to learn what works and make smarter investment choices going forward.
ROI considers your actual cost and sale value, unlike simple price percentage change.
Crypto ROI Formula
The ROI is calculated using the following formula:
Net Profit = Final Value - Initial Investment Cost - Fees
ROI (%) = (Net Profit / Initial Investment Cost) * 100
Where:
- Initial Investment Cost: The total amount you paid to acquire the crypto.
- Final Value: The current market value of the crypto or the amount you sold it for.
- Fees: Any transaction fees incurred.
Our main Crypto Profit Calculator also calculates ROI, but includes more detailed inputs for buy/sell prices and quantities.
Example ROI Calculation
Imagine you invested $1,000 in a cryptocurrency. Later, its value increased, and you sold it for $1,500. You paid $20 in trading fees.
- Initial Investment Cost: $1,000
- Final Value: $1,500
- Fees: $20
Net Profit = $1,500 - $1,000 - $20 = $480
ROI = ($480 / $1,000) * 100 = 48%
This means your investment yielded a 48% return.
ROI vs. Price Percentage Change
While similar, ROI and price percentage change are different. The Percentage Change Calculator tells you how much the *price* of an asset changed. ROI tells you how much *your specific investment* in that asset changed, considering your entry cost and any fees.
For instance, if a coin's price went up 50%, but you bought at a peak and sold after fees, your personal ROI might be lower, or even negative.
